Simple Syrup

The name says it all! For day 4 of Alberta Co-op Basics Week, I’m sharing the technique for Simple Syrup, an essential for adding sweetness to iced beverages in which sugar crystals won’t dissolve. No self respecting bar should be without a bottle!

Instructions
  1. Combine sugar and water in a heavy bottomed saucepan and bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat and simmer for about 2 minutes, until sugar is completely dissolved. Remove from heat and let cool. Pour into a sterile jar or bottle with a tight fitting lid. Keeps for about a month in the fridge.
Recipe Notes
  • This can be made in any volume by mixing equal parts sugar and water.
  • Make flavored syrups by adding a sprig of fresh herbs (rosemary, thyme, mint), spices (ginger root, cinnamon sticks, whole nutmeg), citrus rind, vanilla beans, tea (I'm partial to Earl Grey), etc. After you remove the mixture from the heat, drop in your add-in(s) of choice. Steep until desired flavor is achieved. Strain and pour into sterile container.
  • Use your flavored creations for homemade sodas by mixing them with seltzer.
  • For Honey Simple Syrup, replace half the sugar with honey. I especially like this infused with lavender. It makes a lovely lemonade!
